Every year on the last Tuesday in Januari people of Shetland gather to watch or take part (guizing, carrying a torch) in the procession of all the squads accompanying the galley to its final burning. After the burning of the Galley the party really can start and all the hall’s will stay busy until early next morning.
A real challenge is to try and capture the famous Up Helly Aa fire festival on camera. Its a good night for the event. Not to cold, fair, windy and dry. To see the spectacle it pays to get there early. So after enduring the cold for more then an hour the procession got underway on precisely 19.30. And it was worth the wait!
